What Does Sober Friendly Mean at Operation Horses Heal?

At Operation Horses Heal, you’ll notice that all of our events are labeled as sober-friendly. This isn’t just a policy; it’s a deliberate choice that reflects our commitment to supporting the diverse and often complex journeys of the Veterans, active service members, and families we serve. We want to take a moment to explain what “sober-friendly” means in practice—and why it is so important to our community.

What Does Sober-Friendly Mean?

When we say sober-friendly, we mean that our events are spaces where alcohol, drugs, and other substances are not part of the environment. This is not about judgment or exclusion; it is about respect, safety, and inclusivity. Our property is substance-free during events to honor the many individuals who are recovering from substance use, coping with trauma, managing grief, or navigating the challenges of military-to-civilian transition.

By maintaining a sober environment, we create a space where participants can fully engage with the healing power of nature, horses, and community—without distractions or risks associated with substance use.

Why Sober-Friendly Matters for Our Community

Many Veterans and service members face unique challenges, including higher risks of substance use disorders, mental health struggles, and social isolation. Creating sober-friendly spaces helps address some of these issues by:

  • Promoting safety and inclusivity: No one needs to worry about exposure to substances that could trigger relapse or discomfort.
  • Supporting recovery journeys: For those in recovery or seeking to maintain sobriety, having safe social options is crucial.
  • Encouraging connection and community: Without substances as a social lubricant, interactions become more genuine and supportive.
  • Honoring family-friendly values: Many of our participants attend with their children or extended family, and sober events foster an atmosphere of calm and respect.

Whether you are in active recovery, choosing a sober lifestyle, or simply prefer an alcohol- and drug-free environment, you are wholeheartedly welcome here.
