Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Learning is a type of equine-assisted service offered at Operation Horses Heal, providing Veterans, active military members, and their families with unique, non-ridden experiences alongside horses and donkeys. These sessions focus on hands-on, interactive activities that foster trust, patience, and teamwork in a non-judgmental environment. Through guided exercises, participants develop skills like communication, resilience, and focus, deepening their connection to themselves, others, and the natural world. EFL sessions are rejuvenating and aim to strengthen relationships, inspire personal insight, and build community. Sessions can be scheduled individually or in small groups, with a maximum group size of six participants. Contact us for more information and scheduling.

Veteran’s Horsemanship Group

Our Veteran's Unmounted Horsemanship and Donkey Group offers a unique opportunity for Veterans to connect with horses and donkeys through ground-based interactions. In this supportive program, participants engage in horsemanship and donkey-handling skills focused entirely on unmounted activities, allowing them to experience the connection and calm these animals bring without the need to ride.

Through hands-on learning, Veterans gain insights into equine behavior, practice handling techniques, and build trust with their equine partners. Horses and donkeys each bring distinct qualities to the experience, with donkeys offering a calm, steady presence and horses a sensitive, responsive energy—together providing a diverse and enriching experience. Open to all experience levels, this group fosters personal growth and community support, creating an environment that encourages confidence, reduces stress, and nurtures a renewed sense of purpose and connection with both nature and fellow Veterans.

Barn Buddies

Barn Buddies is a unique program designed to bring veteran and military kids, ages 9-14, together for a series of farm days from April to August 2025. Through hands-on activities with horses and donkeys, participants gain new skills and build friendships in a welcoming environment that supports emotional resilience and confidence. Each monthly session is tailored to address the unique challenges military children face, particularly those in rural and underserved Wisconsin areas where community resources can be limited. By connecting youth with animals, nature, and each other, Barn Buddies fosters a sense of belonging, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and strengthen protective factors that benefit mental health. The program provides a memorable and supportive experience for military families and helps their children thrive. Registration is OPEN! Click here!
